The Golf 1.6 TDI Comfortline uses the excellent new 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine now finding its way throughout the VW range, replacing the old 1.9-litre turbodiesel engine. The new engine offers the same power and torque as the old one, but it is notably lighter on fuel and has a Total Economy Run victory under its belt in Polo guise. If the engine has a single weakness, it is poor bottom-end torque delivery, making it easy to stall before the turbo has had a chance to spool up.
This is less of a bother at sea level, but if you can stretch the budget R15,000 further, you would be much happier with the 7-speed DSG version, which effectively overcomes the problem. The Golf is supremely comfortable and an excellent cruiser with the best refinement in this class. Build quality is rock solid, used values high and there are dealers all over the country. However, try the excellent DSG before making a purchasing decision.
