The Toyota Avanza 1.3SX is the ideal Avanza if you regard safety as paramount but you buy on a limited budget. It is the cheapest model with twin airbags and ABS brakes and essentially shares its specification with the bigger-engined 1.5SX. However, it has only 67 kW, as opposed to 80 and it is also R9,000 cheaper. Gearing is short and the engine buzzes incessantly at cruising speeds, but there is an honest, endearing quality to the simple Avanza with its rear-wheel drive configuration and solid rear axle. A boon is that it has a very tight turning circle.
If you live at sea level, it might do the job well enough, but there is very little power in reserve from the little engine for hill climbing and overtaking. At altitude and with the standard air conditioner going, you will face an uphill battle getting anywhere fast. Still, the little 1300 revs lustily if noisily and feels unburstable. Keep in mind that the air conditioning only has dashboard vents, so it will struggle to cool down the large interior on hot days and the rearmost passengers will complain loudest.
