Burchmores a vehicle auctioneering company the largest one in South Africa and established in 1911. Burchmores have branches in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town and all over South Africa.
We do finance and we are proudly auction on behalf of:
- Mutual and Federal
- Standard Bank
We have auctions every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays.
Burchmores was established 100 years ago in 1911 as JC Burchmores and has become the largest vehicle auctioneer in South Africa; additional peace of mind is afforded the buyer or seller by dint of the fact that Burchmores has been a division of McCarthy Limited since 1988, which is in turn a Bidvest subsidiary. In fact, since 1988, Burchmores have auctioned over 800,000 vehicles. It was one of the first companies in South Africa to give South Africans the opportunity to buy and sell virtually any type of car at auction.
Burchmores is South Africa’s largest vehicle remarketing company with an annual turnover of one billion Rand, selling more than 50,000 vehicles per year – a far cry from its very first auction in 1911 where it started out with a grand total of ten auction vehicles. The company’s “wholesale to the public” concept yields very competitive prices and finance and warranties are only some of the additional services rendered. A selection of around 2,000 vehicles are offered at any given time – the largest selection in the country – from salvage vehicles to nearly new vehicles. Anybody can buy or trade-in at Burchmores and the company does not only cater for the Trade.
The majority of Burchmores customers are businesses like rental companies, leasing and finance houses, manufacturers, fleet operators and national authorities. The company handles the sale of vehicles on behalf of their vendors and sell these cars to their buyers. Whether you want to buy directly off the floor or bid on auction vehicles, Burchmores has a vehicle to suit your specific needs.
All vehicles are sourced through fleet disposals or parts-exchanges by companies (trade-in vehicles) and from banks (bank-repossessed vehicles) and also manufacturers and distributors of vehicles, including national dealer groups. Burchmores acts as their agent and fulfils the role of bringing the buyer and seller together, guaranteeing both parties maximum protection thanks to their expertise. All the Burchmores branches (in Cape Town, Sandton and Durban) are open seven days a week and each holds two auctions per week.
Burchmores is unique because:
- They have created a unique Internet Café facility, whereby prospective buyers can browse through the great number of vehicles available on the Internet and in the comfort of a café environment while enjoying free coffee.
- It is the only place that offers a drive-through auction facility that moves faster and is more convenient; every vehicle is driven through the podium for your convenience and so that you can see the vehicle being driven and hear the engine running.
- The public can view vehicles at any of the Burchmores centres seven days a week (Saturdays are the busiest trading days.)
- A wide range of insurance, warranties and financial products are offered, courtesy of our affiliation with the McCarthy Group.
- The company not only presents auctions but also sells off the floor and trade-ins are welcome.
- The sole African licence for British Car Auctions (Europe’s largest vehicle remarketing company) resides with Burchmores.
- Burchmores is a member of S.A.I.A. (South African Institute of Auctioneers)
S.A.I.A. is a voluntary body representing South Africa’s auctioneering industry and was established to set a number of standards to which its members must adhere to promote the professional and ethical practise of auctioneering as a profession. Being a member of S.A.I.A. demonstrates a company’s commitment to providing both buyers and sellers with a professional and ethical service. S.A.I.A. members that sell property are also compelled to belong to the Estate Agency Affairs Board and as such, they also contribute to the Fidelity Fund, which offers protection to all members of the public involved in selling or buying moveable goods at an auction.
Burchmores’ Cape Town base is in Motague Gardens, only twenty minutes’ drive from Cape Town’s CBD and holds auctions on Wednesday evenings at 18h00 and Saturday mornings at 11h00. The Gauteng branch is in Sandton and is a very large complex situated just off the M1; this branch’s auctions are held Thursday evenings at 19h00 and Saturday mornings at 10h30. The Durban branch operates from a custom-designed centre in Umgeni on the outskirts of Durban, just off the N2; this facility holds auctions on Wednesday evenings at 18h30 and Saturday mornings at 10h30.
Selling your vehicle has never been easier; you simply call in for an evaluation and we will handle the rest. The valuation costs R100 but it is refunded if we purchase the vehicle, so you just have to remember to bring the correct paperwork along. If your vehicle has been paid off in full, bring its original registration papers, proof of ownership (if owned for less than five years) and two certified copies of your ID. If you are still paying off a settlement, bring a recent settlement letter from the bank and two certified copies of your ID.
